Making Your Infrared Heat Actually Smart
Here is the cool thing about infrared heaters: they don’t bother warming up the air. Instead, they go straight for the target—you. It’s like standing in a patch of sunlight on a chilly day. Because of that, they’re a dream for smart homes. You don’t have to wait twenty minutes for a room to “warm up.” You just turn it on, and you feel it. Immediately.
Getting that “Welcome Home” Feeling
If you want your place to feel cozy the second you walk through the door, you’ll want to tie your heaters into something like Zigbee or Matter. But it’s more than just a digital on-off switch. Behind the scenes, the system uses a high-current relay or a PWM controller to handle the power. This means you can set up a “Welcome Home” scene in your app. The moment your door unlocks, the heaters hit full blast. By the time you’ve taken off your coat, you’re already warm.
Don’t Melt Your Gear
Now, a word of caution. Please, for the love of everything,do not plug a heavy-duty infrared lamp into a cheap $10 smart plug. Those little plugs aren’t built for a sustained 10A-15A load. They’ll melt. It’s a fire hazard, plain and simple. You need heavy-duty contactors or smart thermostats specifically designed to handle that kind of power. And if you want it to feel natural—not just blasting heat and then cutting out—look into PID loops. Instead of the heater just clicking on and off like a loud light switch, it subtly adjusts the power based on a remote sensor. If the room hits 22°C, it just dials back the wattage to keep things steady.
The Catch (Because there’s always one)
Getting this set up does make your wiring a bit more annoying. You’ll likely need a stable neutral wire at the switch box to make the smart modules work. Plus, remember that infrared is all about the “line of sight.” If you hide the heater behind a curtain or a sofa because it doesn’t match your decor, you’ve basically defeated the purpose. The heat won’t reach you. You’ve got to be smart about where you put them. Map out the room first so you don’t end up with “cold spots” where you’re shivering while the other side of the room is baking.
