
Keeping Your Class 100 Cleanroom Actually Clean
If you’re heating a vacuum chamber in a Class 100 environment, you already know the nightmare: one tiny speck of dust or a whiff of outgassing, and your wafers or optical coatings are toast. It’s frustrating. Most standard heating elements just aren’t built for this; they flake off or leak volatile organic compounds (VOCs) right when you need them to be stable. That’s why we stick with high-purity synthetic quartz infrared lamps. The secret is in the quartz. We use fused silica with almost zero impurities. Why? Because when you’re cycling temperatures up and down, you can’t have the material breaking down. Standard glass would just crack under that kind of stress. But this quartz barely expands when it gets hot. It just holds. We also stripped out all the organic binders and adhesives from the assembly. No glues, no fillers. This means you won’t get that “first-time smoke” or weird gassing when the lamp hits its operating temp in a vacuum. Dealing with the vacuum. Here’s the tricky part: in a vacuum, you lose convective cooling. There’s no air to move the heat around, so everything happens via radiation. We design these lamps with high power density. It lets you get your target up to temperature without accidentally baking the entire chamber wall. But you’ve got to be careful with your power supply. Match the voltage exactly. If you over-drive a high-wattage tube, you’ll fry the filament. Since there’s no air to carry away the waste heat from the electrodes, the heat just sits there until something snaps. Getting them installed. To keep things from oxidizing at the connection points, we use gold-plated contacts and precision-machined end caps. They’re designed to be simple drop-in replacements for your existing arrays. One word of warning, though: quartz is chemically tough, but physically? It’s fragile.
