You’ve probably seen the IP55 rating on a lot of heaters. On paper, it means the thing can handle some dust and a few splashes of water. But if you’re putting a heater in a bathroom or out on a patio, that rating is just the starting line. Here’s the problem: steam is sneakier than a water jet. While a splash of water might bounce off the casing, humidity just… drifts. It finds the tiny gaps. It seeps through seals. Over a few months, that moisture settles right on the electrical terminals and those delicate quartz glass seals. If a seal lets go, the halogen gas leaks out, and your lamp is dead. Just like that. That’s why we don’t just trust the rating. We put our lamps through “damp-heat aging.” Basically, we throw them into a high-humidity chamber, crank up the heat, and let them sweat. We’re simulating years of bathroom steam in a fraction of the time. We’re looking for rust on the contacts or any weird electrical leaks. If a unit doesn’t survive 500 hours of this torture, we go back to the drawing board and fix the seal. But there’s a catch. You can’t just seal a heater in a plastic box. If you do, the electronics will cook themselves. It’s a balancing act. We have to design venting paths that let the heat breathe out while keeping the water from sneaking in. And we stopped using cheap rubber for the gaskets a long time ago. Rubber is great until it gets hot, cools down, and does it again a thousand times. Eventually, it cracks. We use high-grade silicone instead because it actually holds its shape, no matter how many times you flip the switch. Now, let’s be real. Nothing lasts forever. If you’re living by the ocean with salty air, or if you’re scrubbing your walls with harsh chemicals, even the best coating will wear down. My best advice? Every six months, just take a quick look at the cable glands. Give them a check. A loose gland is the fastest way to kill a perfectly good heater, and it’s a five-second fix that saves you from buying a new one.
