Ever notice how bathroom heaters always seem to die right when you need them most? It’s usually because they just aren’t built for the steam. We’re seeing a lot more people switch over to IP55-rated infrared systems lately, mostly because they actually hold up against the humidity and dust that kill those old-school halogen lamps. The deal with IP55 and moisture If you see “IP55” on a box, it basically means the unit can handle dust and low-pressure water splashes coming from any direction. In a bathroom, that’s a big deal. It keeps the steam and the occasional stray splash from hitting the electrical guts of the machine. Those old “lamp warmers” usually have tiny gaps in the housing. Moisture creeps in, things start to corrode, and eventually, you get a short circuit. We seal these units tight so the heating element stays bone-dry. Heat you can actually feel Here’s the thing about traditional heaters: they try to warm up the air. If you’ve got high ceilings or a drafty window, that heat just floats away. You’re left shivering while the ceiling gets warm. Infrared is different. It doesn’t bother with the air; it warms you and the objects around you directly. You flip the switch, and you feel it instantly. We use short-wave emitters because they punch through the air faster and hit deeper. It’s immediate. A few things to keep in mind Now, you can’t just plug one of these into a cheap extension cord and call it a day. These things pull a lot of power, so you’ll need a dedicated circuit. And a word of caution: if you put one of these in a tiny, airtight shower stall, it’s going to get hot. Fast. You’ll want to make sure your ventilation is up to the task, or you’re basically stepping into a sauna. If you’re renovating and you’re sick of that “cold shock” the second you step out of the shower, this is the way to go. It’s a massive upgrade over those old light-bulbs, as long as your electrical panel can handle the load.
