
Keeping the Rain (and the Fog) Out of Your Outdoor Heaters
Outdoor heaters have a tough job. They’re basically fighting a constant war against moisture. Whether it’s a sudden rainstorm or just that heavy evening dew, water is the enemy. It’s the main reason why so many patio heaters short circuit or just stop working way sooner than they should. Dealing with the splashes Usually, water finds its way into the electrical terminals first. That’s where the trouble starts. We use sealed gaskets and specific housing to keep the wet stuff out. But we don’t just wrap the whole thing in plastic—that doesn’t actually work. Instead, we built in drainage paths. The goal is to make sure water doesn’t pool around the heating element, which stops the connectors from rusting away. The fogging problem Then there’s the fog. You know how your glasses fog up when you walk into a warm room? The same thing happens to the emitter surface when the temperature swings. It’s not just about looks, either. When moisture builds up on the quartz tube, the heat doesn’t spread evenly. You get these “hot spots” where the glass gets too stressed and can actually crack. To fix this, we added anti-fogging coatings and tweaked the airflow. It keeps the glass dry so the heat actually hits you, instead of getting scattered by a bunch of tiny water droplets. The tricky part: Heat vs. Water Here’s the catch. If you seal a heater too tightly to keep the rain out, you trap the heat inside. If the electronics can’t breathe, they’ll just bake themselves to death. It’s a balancing act. We use heat-conductive materials for the chassis so the unit can shed internal heat while staying waterproof. Just a heads-up: make sure your mounting bracket doesn’t block that airflow. If it does, the thermal cutoff will kick in and shut your heater down right when you’re trying to stay warm. At the end of the day, it’s pretty simple. We keep the electricity dry and the glass clear. That’s how you get a heater that actually lasts.
