
Keeping IR Lamps Safe Around Flammable Chemicals
When you’re running IR lamps in a chemical cleaning zone, you’re basically playing with fire—literally. You’ve got volatile vapors floating around, and all it takes is one stray spark or a surface that’s just a bit too hot to turn your workspace into a disaster zone. We’ve spent a lot of time figuring out how to stop that from happening. The secret is a mix of high-purity aluminum reflectors and some pretty heavy-duty sealing.
Why we stick with aluminum
We use anodized aluminum reflectors to push that IR radiation exactly where it needs to go: onto the workpiece. Aluminum is our go-to because it doesn’t warp under pressure and it’s great at bouncing the IR spectrum back into the action. The real win here is that by focusing the energy so tightly, the rest of the chassis stays cooler. It means the outer housing won’t accidentally become a heater that ignites the fumes drifting by.
Locking things down
To keep those nasty vapors away from the electrical terminals, we don’t just throw a lid on the lamp. We seal the whole assembly in a specialized enclosure. Think of it as a fortress. We use high-temp gaskets and sealed cable entries so gas can’t sneak into the heating chamber. And the wiring? It’s built for the heat. If your insulation melts or cracks in a room full of solvents, you’re looking at a short circuit—and that’s the last thing you want. We use reinforced cabling that can take a beating from chemical exposure and keep on ticking.
The trade-offs (Because nothing is perfect)
Here’s the thing: safety has a price. Because the enclosure adds some bulk, the lamps take a little longer to warm up than an open-air setup. You’ll notice a slight lag, so just bake that into your cycle timing. Plus, you’ve got to stay on top of cleaning. If chemicals build up on the aluminum, the reflectivity drops. Your lamps will have to work harder and run hotter to get the job done, which puts a lot of stress on those seals. Keep your maintenance tight, and the system will take care of you.
