
Dealing with Electrical Leaks in Bathroom Heaters
Putting infrared lamps in a bathroom is basically like starting a war with moisture. It’s a constant struggle. Here’s what happens: water vapor sneaks into the heater housing and creates these tiny conductive paths. Before you know it, you’ve got current leakage or, even worse, a total short circuit. To stop that from happening, you have to get serious about the IP65 rating and how the replacement element is actually insulated. The reality of IP65 You’ll see “IP65” on the box, which basically means it’s dust-tight and can handle water jets. But honestly? That rating is only as good as the seal around the lamp terminals. We use specialized gaskets and sealed cable entries because we don’t want steam touching those live contacts. If a seal fails, moisture settles right on the quartz tube. That creates a bridge between the high-voltage filament and the grounded chassis. Not a good place to be. Materials that actually work We stick with high-purity quartz glass. It’s a natural insulator, which is exactly what you need. For those really damp zones, we use elements with reinforced end-cap seals. This keeps moisture from wicking its way inside to the tungsten filament. But don’t forget your wiring. Check it. Make sure your ground connection is solid. Having a floating ground in a wet room is just asking for trouble. I always recommend pairing these IP65 elements with a residual current device (RCD). It’ll trip the circuit the second it feels a leak. The hidden catch Here is the trade-off: when you seal a heater to IP65 standards, you’re trapping heat inside the box. This makes the area around the sockets get incredibly hot. You can’t just toss a high-wattage lamp into a tight, sealed housing and hope for the best. You have to check the thermal limits of your wiring. If those sockets overheat, the insulation on your lead wires will get brittle and crack. It’s a balancing act. You have to weigh your wattage against how well the housing can breathe and shed heat, or you’ll just burn out the internals.
